05/2025 - Scout Report

2025 Course Design is complete and all permits are in place for a great race on 08/23/2025!  I am going to try to balance not sharing too much information in this report but also give you a clear idea as to what you can expect in both the 14hr and 7hr versions of our race this year.

Check the main updates page for a schedule of information to come and an idea of that context.  Feel free to reach out to me for more information!

Announcing our HQ!

Team LadyPenguins Fundraising is proud to partner with the Village of Cassville, WI and host the race in beautiful Riverside Park!  We will be enjoying after race food from local Moon's Town Pump who will source us beer from nearby Potosi Brewery.  As a race organization we are committed to leveraging as many local businesses as possible!  Check the Village site for info on their Ferry Cruise for a relaxing afterparty!

Course Design Highlights

If you've been to series races this year like Stubborn Fool or Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge, you may have heard Ryan talking about bluffs, waterfalls, and lots of "Whoa..." views (especially in the 14hr race)!

At this time, we'll happily confirm 2 things:

  • Nelson Dewey State Park will be a feature location in both race lengths

  • All racers will experience the thrill of paddling on the Mississippi River

    • Maps will show main channel traffic zones

    • We will have a safety discussion and I will provide lots of information on future updates about eddys, current, and traffic

    • Water levels will be monitored leading up to the race

Be sure to Like & Follow @LadyPenguinMud on Facebook and you will get clues on possible CP locations from these past months of scouting!

Elevation is a factor

The "driftless" region of Southwestern WI is very unique and a stunning part of the Midwest.  But all that stunning comes at a cost of going up to see it, or coming up from being down in it.

With this in mind, I have updated the race 'about' pages that previously had estimated distances with more accurate representations from my trips in the area of what the race will be.  I have also included some elevation ranges you can expect to face on foot and on bike by length.

Don't hate me, I get to do it 3x...  For 2 races...

What Else Can I Know Right Now!?

Come to other races in the Wisconsin Adventure Racing Series this summer and you will probably see Ryan or hear him chatting about parts of WWAR 25.  For now, consider these couple things:

As a racer, Ryan is mid pack (generous) and wants to throw a bone to his fellows.  The 14hr and 7hr races will be very clearable.  Navigation will be easier than some races with exception of a handful of more challenging points.  The hardest aspect of these races will be your grit and your efficient route planning.

To that end, and to accommodate an early start for the 14hr teams, maps will be emailed on the Thursday before the race following the pre race video release.
